Pitru Tarpanam — a sacred duty toward the ancestors

Pitru Tarpanam is one of the most ancient Vedic ceremonies, dedicated to honouring the ancestors (Pitru). According to the Vedic tradition, the souls of departed ancestors continue to exert a profound influence on the lives of their descendants. Tarpanam is a ritual offering of water mixed with sesame (thila), rice and other sacred substances, which "nourishes" and appeases the souls of the ancestors.
