Chokhor Duchen (Tib. ཆོས་འཁོར་དུས་ཆེན, chos ‘khor dus chen — "the great day of the Wheel of Dharma") is one of the four greatest festivals of Tibetan Buddhism. It marks the day when Buddha Shakyamuni first expounded his teaching — the "first turning of the Wheel of Dharma". The festival falls on the 4th day of the 6th month of the Tibetan lunar calendar; in 2026 this is July 18.
After his enlightenment beneath the Bodhi tree at Bodh Gaya, the Buddha kept silence for seven weeks, hesitant to teach: he feared no one could grasp the depth of what he had realized. According to tradition, the gods Indra and Brahma offered him a golden Wheel of Dharma and a conch shell and implored him to address living beings. The Buddha agreed and went to the Deer Park at Sarnath near Varanasi, where he delivered his first teaching to his five former companions — the teaching on the Four Noble Truths.
There are, O monks, two extremes that one who has gone forth should not follow. There is a middle path leading to insight, to peace, to higher knowledge, to awakening, to nirvana. It is the Noble Eightfold Path."
It was at this very moment, by tradition, that the Buddhist teaching first entered the human world: the Dharma arose as proclamation and the first Sangha — the community of disciples — came into being. Thus the Three Jewels were formed — the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha. The symbol of the eight-spoked Wheel, one of the eight auspicious emblems of Buddhism, points directly to the eight branches of the Noble Path: right view, intention, speech, action, livelihood, effort, mindfulness and concentration.
Chokhor Duchen is one of the four "duchens" — great days connected with the deeds of the Buddha (alongside Saga Dawa Duchen, Lhabab Duchen and Chötrül Düchen, the festival of the display of miracles). According to traditional texts, on these days the fruit of any action — virtuous or unwholesome — is multiplied a hundred million times. Therefore on Chokhor Duchen Buddhists take special care to accumulate merit: they make offerings, recite sutras, light butter lamps and refrain from unwholesome actions.
The traditional practices of Chokhor Duchen include: reciting the Dharmachakra Sutra and prayers, lighting butter lamps, circumambulating stupas and holy sites clockwise (kora), raising prayer flags, offering juniper smoke (sang), ransoming and freeing animals (tsethar), making offerings to the Sangha and being generous to those in need. Many observe vegetarianism on this day and try to keep the mind in wholesome states, mindful of the hundred-million-fold multiplication of karmic results.
Merit (punya, Tib. sönam) is the wholesome energy accumulated through good deeds, which becomes a cause of happiness and favourable circumstances in the future. On ordinary days it accrues gradually; on Chokhor Duchen, as the traditional texts teach, any virtuous action bears a hundred-million-fold fruit. A single lamp offered, a single sutra recited, a single kind act on this day equals in power a vast multitude of the same actions at any other time.
On the days of the Buddha's great deeds, even a small virtue brings an immeasurable fruit, and a small misdeed entails an immeasurable consequence. Therefore be especially attentive to mind and to action on these days."
